A journey to Raigad Fort is never just a weekend trek – it is a pilgrimage into Maratha history. Raigad stands proud not only for its rugged cliffs and dramatic elevation, but as the historic capital where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was crowned. The Raigad Fort Heritage Trail is a guided one-day walk through the capital of Hindavi Swarajya, from the base village of Pachad right up to the Samadhi on the plateau.
The Historic Ascent
The climb follows the traditional stone-cut steps, passing Nane Darwaja and Chitta Darwaja before arriving at the iconic Maha Darwaja – nestled between colossal bastions designed to stay invisible from a distance. In the monsoon, tiny waterfalls cascade down the steps and mist rolls across the bastions, making the ascent a sensory treat.
The Capital Plateau
On top you walk the royal grounds of Holi Cha Mal, stand before the acoustically brilliant Nagarkhana, and step into the Raj Sabha (Durbar) where the historic Rajyabhishek took place, with the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj under the Meghdambari. The trail continues along the double-rowed stone plinths of the ancient Bazaar Peth, on to the serene Jagdishwar Temple with Hiroji Indulkar’s humble inscription, the sacred Samadhi of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and the dramatic cliff edge of Takmak Tok.
