Upandya to Madhe Ghat Crossover Trek: The Ultimate Sahyadri Loop

Step into the rugged heart of the Western Ghats with the thrilling Upandya to Madhe Ghat Trek organized by Trek & Travel With Sakhi. This classic crossover trail offers an authentic Sahyadri ridge-and-valley experience, connecting the high Deccan plateau of Velhe with the dense coastal foothill forests of the Konkan basin.

Unlike standard summit hikes, this circuit is a true endurance trail: you descend deep into the untamed gorge through the steep, narrow scree of Upandya Ghat, traverse lush valley river streams at the Konkan floor, and push back up through the stone steps and gushing mist of the legendary Madhe Ghat.

Trail Overview & Historical Significance

The trail begins from the high-altitude village of Kelad near Pune. The descent through Upandya Ghat is a less-frequented shepherd trail framed by colossal rocky cliffs, offering raw boulder scrambles and unmatched silence under dense canopy cover.

After crossing the cool streams at the base, the ascent via Madhe Ghat immerses you in Maratha history. This pass was strategically used to carry the mortal remains of the great Maratha commander Narveer Tanaji Malusare to his native village of Umrathe after the battle of Sinhagad. As you climb, you are rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the thunderous Madhe Ghat waterfall and distant sights of Torna and Rajgad forts.
