Sarasgad rises straight above Pali town, and the climb is almost entirely rock-cut steps — several hundred of them carved into the hillside, with the Ballaleshwar Ganpati temple at its foot.

About the fort

A compact hill fort that guarded the Pali valley, Sarasgad came under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 1650s. What it lacks in size it makes up for in the staircase: long flights cut directly into the rock, steep enough to keep your attention the whole way up.

What the trek is like

From Pali the trail reaches the base of the rock face quickly, and from there it is steps almost all the way, with a couple of exposed stretches where we keep the group close together. The summit is small, with bastions on either side.

Shoes with a firm grip, 2 to 3 litres of water, electrolytes and quick snacks, a cap and sunscreen, a 20 to 30 litre backpack and a torch.
