Overview

Salher is the highest fort in Maharashtra and the second highest peak in the state, and its twin Salota stands right beside it. This is the Baglan range at its best — long ridges, old gateways and a battlefield that changed Maratha history.

About the fort

The Battle of Salher in 1672 was the first open-field victory of the Maratha army against the Mughals, and it was fought on the ground below this fort. The summit carries a Parshuram temple and the ruins of a large garrison. Salota, across the col, is a shorter but steeper climb.

Quick facts

  • Location: Waghambe / Salherwadi, Baglan, Nashik district
  • Elevation: Salher about 5,141 ft, Salota about 4,986 ft
  • Difficulty: Difficult
  • Duration: about 3 to 4 hours to Salher
  • Best season: October to February
  • Minimum age: 16+

What the trek is like

A long ascent from Waghambe through a series of gateways and rock-cut steps. The gradient is relentless rather than technical, but the distance and the altitude make this the hardest trek on our list. Salota is added only for groups moving well.
