The Story Behind the Name

The peak is named after Kalsubai, a local goddess. According to local legend, Kalsubai was one of three sisters, and the nearby fort of Ratangad is named after another sister, Ratnabai. A small temple to Kalsubai Devi stands on the summit, and many devotees climb to it, especially during Navratri.

Kalsubai Trek Route from Bari

The main route starts from Bari village. The trail first crosses fields and a stream, then climbs steadily through open slopes and patches of forest. Higher up, the path becomes steep and rocky, and a series of iron ladders and railings help you over the steepest sections. The last stretch leads to the small summit with the temple and wide views all around.

  • Bari to the first ladders: a steady climb through fields and slopes, with a few small food and tea stalls on the way on busy days
  • Ladder sections: several iron ladders over steep rock faces. Climb one person at a time
  • Summit: a small, often windy top with the Kalsubai Devi temple

Kalsubai Night Trek for Sunrise

One of the most popular ways to do Kalsubai is a night trek: start from Bari late at night, climb with torches, and reach the summit just before dawn to watch the sunrise over the Sahyadris. On clear winter mornings the sea of clouds and the first light on Alang, Madan and Kulang are unforgettable.

  • Do a night trek only with a group and an experienced leader.
  • Carry a head torch with spare batteries so your hands are free on the ladders.
  • The summit is very cold and windy before sunrise. Carry a warm jacket, a cap and gloves.

What You See from the Top

  • Bhandardara lake (Arthur Lake): the large lake below the peak
  • Alang, Madan and Kulang: three famous forts in a row
  • Ratangad and Harishchandragad: on clear days, the forts of the same sanctuary
  • The Kalsubai range: ridges and peaks in every direction

How to Reach Kalsubai (Bari Village)

  • From Mumbai: by road via Kasara and Igatpuri towards Bhandardara and Bari, about 4 hours. By train, go to Kasara or Igatpuri, then take a local vehicle to Bari.
  • From Pune: by road via Sangamner or via Nashik side towards Bhandardara and Bari, about 5 hours.
  • From Nashik: via Igatpuri to Bari, about 2 hours.
  • Nearby: Bhandardara and its dam are about 6 km from the peak, with stays and lakeside camps.

Best Time for the Kalsubai Trek

From the end of the monsoon until about February is the best time. In October and November the hills are still green and the waterfalls are flowing, while December to February brings clear skies and the best sunrises, with very cold mornings at the top. In heavy monsoon the trail is slippery, the ladders are wet and the views are often lost in cloud. Summer days are hot, so start very early if you go then.
