Two of the most photographed silhouettes in the Sahyadris stand side by side above Panvel: the sheer pinnacle of Kalavantin Durg with its staircase cut straight into the rock, and the broad fortress plateau of Prabalgad. This one day trek from Mumbai and Pune climbs both from the shared base at Prabalmachi.
About the two forts
Prabalgad, known earlier as Muranjan, was a Bahmani stronghold later taken by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and renamed. It guarded the trade route between the Konkan coast and the Deccan plateau. Kalavantin Durg rises beside it as a near-vertical thumb of rock, its famous flight of steps carved into the face with no mortar and no railing — one of the most striking pieces of fort engineering in Maharashtra.
Quick facts
- Location: Thakurwadi / Prabalmachi, near Panvel, Raigad district

- Nearest station: Panvel, then road to Thakurwadi
What the trail is like
The walk starts at Thakurwadi and climbs steadily through forest and rock steps to Prabalmachi, the saddle that both forts share. From there the two summits split: a scrambling trail with a short rocky section leads up to the Prabalgad plateau, while the Kalavantin steps rise directly from the machi in a single exposed flight.
The Kalavantin staircase is cut into open rock with a drop on one side and no handrail. Our leaders take it slowly, in small groups, with a fixed rope where the exposure is greatest, and the final pinnacle is attempted only when the rock is dry and the group is comfortable. Nobody is pushed past what they are happy to climb — the view from the top of the steps is worth the trip on its own.

What to carry
Trekking shoes with a firm grip are essential — the Kalavantin steps are unforgiving in smooth-soled footwear. Carry 3 litres of water, electrolytes, quick snacks, a cap and sunscreen, a 20 to 30 litre backpack, and a torch. Gloves help on the steps. Leave loose bags and dangling straps behind.
Good to know
This trek is not recommended in heavy monsoon: the rock steps hold water and moss and turn genuinely dangerous. We run it in the dry months. Vertigo, a fear of heights or a recent knee or ankle injury are all good reasons to speak to the trek leader beforehand — Prabalgad alone still makes a full and rewarding day.
Who this trek suits
Trekkers with a few Sahyadri climbs behind them, photographers after the pinnacle at first light, and anyone who wants a serious day out within easy reach of Mumbai. Not a first trek.
