Why Konkan Kada Is So Special

Most cliffs in the Sahyadri drop straight down. Konkan Kada is different: its face curves inward like a giant hood, so the top edge actually overhangs the wall below. Standing on the plateau, you look out over this curve and down to the villages and forests of the Konkan, far below. On a clear day you can see ridge after ridge of the Western Ghats stretching to the horizon.

In the monsoon and the weeks after it, clouds often pour up the face of the cliff from the valley, and then fall away again, so the view keeps changing every few minutes. On some days the wind blowing up the cliff is so strong that light things thrown over the edge float back up.

The Indravajra: A Circular Rainbow

Konkan Kada is one of the few places in India where people have seen the Indravajra, a full circular rainbow. It can appear when the sun is behind you, low in the sky, and there is a wall of mist or cloud in the valley in front of you. Your own shadow then sits in the middle of a ring of rainbow colours. It is rare and can never be promised, but the chances are best in the late monsoon and early winter, in the early morning or late evening.

Best Time to Visit Konkan Kada

  • October to February: the best time. Clear skies, cool weather, dry trails and the best sunsets. Ideal for a first visit and for camping.
  • Late monsoon (August to September): clouds, green valleys and the best chance of the Indravajra, but the trails are slippery and views can be hidden by mist.
  • March to May: hot and hazy. Go only early in the morning or for the sunset.

Whatever the season, sunset is the time to be at the edge. The sun goes down right in front of the cliff, and the whole wall turns orange and then purple.

How to Reach Konkan Kada

Konkan Kada is on top of Harishchandragad, a short walk from the Harishchandreshwar temple and the camping area on the plateau. To get there you first need to climb the fort. The most popular routes are:

  • From Pachnai village: the easiest and most popular route, good for beginners, about 2 to 3 hours up.
  • From Khireshwar village (Tolar Khind): a longer route with a rock patch, for trekkers with some experience.
  • Nalichi Vaat: a very difficult technical route that climbs a gully below the cliff. Only for experienced climbers with proper gear and a technical team.

From Mumbai: take a train to Kasara or drive via Malshej Ghat to the base village. From Pune: drive via Junnar or Alephata and Malshej Ghat, or via Otur. Read our Harishchandragad camping guide for more details on the route and the night on the fort.

Safety at the Edge

Konkan Kada has no railing, and the drop is huge. A few simple rules keep everyone safe:

  • Stay back from the edge, especially in wind, rain or mist.
  • Never sit with your legs hanging over the edge or jump for photos.
  • If you want to look down, lie flat on your stomach on firm rock, with someone holding your feet. This is how locals and trek leaders do it.
  • Watch your step on wet rock and grass in the monsoon.
  • Go back to camp before dark and carry a torch. The plateau is easy to get lost on at night.
  • Follow your trek leader and stay with the group.

What Else to See on Harishchandragad

  • Harishchandreshwar temple: an ancient stone temple carved from the rock, with water tanks around it.
  • Kedareshwar cave: a large Shivling surrounded by ice-cold water.
  • Taramati peak: the highest point of the fort, great for sunrise.
  • Rock-cut caves around the temple, where many trekkers used to spend the night.
