Planning your first trek but not sure where to start? Maybe you have seen friends post sunrise photos from a Sahyadri fort and wondered, "Can I do that too?" The answer is almost always yes. Most forts near Pune and Mumbai are made for beginners, and with the right trek, the right shoes and the right group, your first trek can be the start of a lifelong habit. This first trek guide covers how to choose a beginner trek, how fit you need to be, what to wear and carry, what happens on trek day, and how to stay safe, especially if you are a woman trekking for the first time.
Am I Fit Enough for My First Trek?
This is the question every beginner asks. If you can walk for an hour at a steady pace and climb four or five floors of stairs without stopping for long, you can do most easy Sahyadri treks. You do not need to be a gym regular. What matters more is pace: a good group walks at the speed of its slowest member, takes short breaks and never rushes anyone.
Two weeks before your trek:
- Walk 30 to 45 minutes every day, at a brisk pace.
- Take the stairs instead of the lift whenever you can.
- Do a few squats and lunges to strengthen your legs.
- Walk in the shoes you plan to trek in, so they are broken in.

How to Choose Your First Trek
For a first trek, look for these things:
- Easy or easy-moderate grade. Avoid treks with rock patches, exposed traverses or long technical sections.
- Clear, well-used trail. Popular forts have clear paths and village help nearby.
- Close to home. A short drive means less tiredness before you even start walking.
- Something to look forward to. A fort with history, a temple, a lake view or a sunrise keeps you going when your legs get tired.
- Right season. October to February is the best time for a first trek. The weather is cool, the trails are dry and the views are clear.

Day Trek or Overnight Camping Trek?
Most people start with a one-day trek. But an easy overnight trek with camping can be an even better first trek: you walk at a relaxed pace over two days, you get to see both sunset and sunrise, and you spend a night under the stars with your group. On a well-organised camping trek, the tents, meals and planning are taken care of, so all you need to do is walk and enjoy.
Harishchandragad is one of the best first overnight treks in Maharashtra. The climb from Pachnai village is gentle, and the reward is huge: the famous Konkan Kada cliff at sunset, the ancient Harishchandreshwar temple and a night camping on the plateau. Read our Harishchandragad camping guide to see what the night is like.

What to Wear on Your First Trek
- Shoes: trekking shoes or sports shoes with a good grip. This is the most important item. Never trek in flat sandals, floaters with worn soles or brand new shoes.
- Clothes: quick-dry T-shirt and comfortable track pants. Avoid jeans, they get heavy and tight when you climb.
- Layers: a light jacket or fleece for early mornings and for the night if you are camping.
- Cap and sunglasses for the afternoon sun.
- Extra socks, always.
First Trek Packing List
Keep your bag light. A 20 to 30 litre backpack is enough for a day trek, and 30 to 40 litres for an overnight trek.
- 2 to 3 litres of water
- Snacks: dry fruits, chikki, biscuits, a fruit or two, ORS or electrolyte sachets
- Torch or headlamp with spare batteries
- Raincoat or poncho (in monsoon)
- Your own basic medicines, a few band-aids and any personal medication
- Sunscreen, lip balm and a small towel
- ID card and some cash (villages often have no network for UPI)
- A plastic bag to carry your waste back down
- For camping: warm layer, extra T-shirt, toothbrush and a power bank

What Happens on Trek Day
Knowing the plan takes away most of the nervousness. A typical trek with a group looks like this:
- Travel: early morning or overnight travel from Pune or Mumbai to the base village.
- Breakfast and briefing: the trek leader explains the route, the rules and the plan for the day.
- The climb: you walk at a steady pace with short breaks. One leader walks in front and one walks at the back, so nobody is left alone.
- At the top: time to explore the fort, hear its history, eat and take photos.
- Descent: going down is often harder on the knees. Take small steps and go slow.
- Return: a meal at the base and the drive home, tired but happy.
Safety Tips for First-Time Trekkers
- Go with an experienced group for your first few treks, not alone.
- Stay with the group and do not take shortcuts.
- Keep away from cliff edges, especially while taking photos.
- Drink water often, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Tell the leader if you feel unwell, dizzy or very tired. There is no shame in slowing down.
- Share your trek plan with family, with the leader's contact number.
- Respect the fort: no littering, no loud music and no writing on walls.
First Trek Tips for Women
Many women want to start trekking but hold back because they are worried about safety or about being the only beginner in the group. Choosing the right group makes all the difference. Look for an organiser that runs groups where women feel safe and welcome, has experienced trek leaders, and takes care of travel, food and stay so you are never left to figure things out alone.
