Which Is More Difficult?

Kalsubai is the harder trek. It is a steady, steep climb of around 13 km for the round trip with about 820 m of height gain, and the iron ladders near the top need care, especially in a crowd. Harishchandragad by the Pachnai route is gentler: a clear path with railings and ladders on the rock sections, and you reach the temple plateau in about 2 to 3 hours. The other routes to Harishchandragad, Khireshwar and especially Nalichi Vaat, are harder, but on your first visit you should take Pachnai.

Camping and Night Stay

This is the biggest difference. Harishchandragad is made for an overnight trek: there is a wide plateau near the temple where groups camp, so you get the Konkan Kada sunset in the evening and the Taramati sunrise next morning. Read our Harishchandragad camping guide. Kalsubai is usually done as a night trek: you start around midnight from Bari and reach the top for sunrise, then come down the same morning. Which Should You Do First?

Choose Harishchandragad first if:

  • This is one of your first treks, or your first overnight trek
  • You want history, temples and caves along with the views
  • You want to camp and see both sunset and sunrise
  • You prefer a relaxed pace over two days

Choose Kalsubai first if:

  • You already trek regularly and want a fitness challenge
  • You want to tick off the highest peak in Maharashtra
  • You are fine with a long, steep climb in one go

For most people, the best order is Harishchandragad first, then Kalsubai. Harishchandragad builds your confidence on a gentler trail, and by the time you do Kalsubai you know your pace and what to carry. New to trekking? Start with our first trek guide.
