The Rajmachi trek is one of the most loved easy-to-moderate treks near Mumbai and Pune. It is a long, scenic walk through forest and grassland to Rajmachi village, which sits between two fort peaks, Shrivardhan and Manaranjan. In the early monsoon the forest around the village is also known for its fireflies. This guide covers the routes from Lonavala and Karjat, how to reach from Mumbai and Pune, the best time to go and what to carry.

Why Trek to Rajmachi
Rajmachi is a trek where the journey is the point. There is no scary climb. You walk on wide trails with forest on one side and valleys on the other, and you reach a village where you can rest, eat and then walk up to the two forts. That is why it is a good pick for first-time trekkers who want a full day outdoors. If you are new to the Sahyadri, read our first trek guide before you go.

Routes to Rajmachi
From Lonavala
Most trek operators quote about 15 to 16 km from Lonavala, and the walk takes many hours with breaks. The path is mostly flat with some ups and downs, so it is more about stamina than difficulty. The walk is usually done on foot through forest, and you should start early so that you reach the village before dark.
From Kondivade (Karjat side)
The route from Kondivade village in Karjat taluka is shorter but steeper, and it is a proper climb. It suits people who prefer a quicker ascent and some effort on the legs. Ask your guide which route is in better condition before the trip, because trails change after heavy rain.
Vehicle access
In the dry months a sturdy vehicle can sometimes reach Udhewadi, but the road is rough and conditions vary. Do not count on it. Plan for a full walk unless your organiser confirms otherwise.
How to Reach from Mumbai and Pune
- From Mumbai: take a local train and then a train towards Lonavala or Karjat, depending on your route. Lonavala is the easiest starting point for the long walk.
- From Pune: take a train or drive to Lonavala. It is a short trip, so you can start early in the morning.
- Check train and bus timings before you travel, and carry cash for the village.
Forts and Places to See
Rajmachi village sits in the gap between Shrivardhan and Manaranjan. Both forts have ruined walls, bastions and water tanks, and the views over the Konkan side and the Sahyadri ridges are the reward. Shrivardhan is the taller of the two. The village also has an old stone Shiv temple.

The Kondana caves, a group of Buddhist rock-cut caves, lie near the foot of the hill. Sources give different dates and cave counts, so we only say that they are ancient, and they are well worth the detour if your guide plans it into the day.

Fireflies at Rajmachi
In the early monsoon, usually around the start of the rains, the forest near the village lights up with fireflies at night. The exact weeks change every year with the rain, so check with your organiser. Keep your torch and phone lights off or dim when you watch, and never catch or disturb them.
Best Time to Trek Rajmachi
The monsoon turns the plateau bright green, and the trek is popular then, but trails are muddy and slippery, and you need good grip. After the rains, the weather is cooler and clearer, which makes the long walk more comfortable. Summer is hot and dry, and we do not recommend it. What to Carry
- 2 to 3 litres of water and light snacks for the walk
- Shoes with good grip, a rain jacket in the monsoon and a change of clothes in a waterproof bag
- A head torch, a cap, sunscreen and a basic first aid kit
- A daypack with both straps worn, and a bag for your rubbish

Safety Tips
- Start early and keep the group together, especially on the forest section.
- Do not walk off the trail in the forest or near the cliff edges.
- Wet grass and rock are slippery, so take small steps and do not run downhill.
- Follow your guide on which route and which fort to attempt in bad weather.
