Ratangad Fort Trek: Conquer the Jewel of the Sahyadri
Join the iconic Ratangad Fort Trek perched high in the scenic Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary overlooking the tranquil waters of Arthur Lake (Bhandardara). Ratangad Fort-literally meaning the Jewel of the Forts-is one of Maharashtra's most celebrated trekking destinations. Known for its rich 400-year-old Maratha heritage, ancient rock-cut cisterns, and colossal cliffs, Ratangad offers an unforgettable alpine-like hiking experience in the Western Ghats.
The signature highlight of the Ratangad Fort Trek is the geological marvel known as Nedhe (Eye of the Needle)-a massive natural wind-carved aperture in the rock ridge where strong gales sweep through, framing majestic views of surrounding giants like Kalsubai, Alang, Madan, Kulang (AMK), and Ajoba.

How to reach Ratangad from Mumbai and Pune
Ratangad’s base village, Ratanwadi, sits at the far end of the Bhandardara reservoir in Akole taluka. It is roughly 190 km from Mumbai and 185 km from Pune, and the last stretch is a narrow ghat road along the lake, so plan on 5-6 hours of travel either way.
From Mumbai - by local train
Our Mumbai group travels together on train 95423, CSMT 10:47 PM to Kasara. Boarding points include CSMT (10:47 PM), Byculla (10:55 PM), Dadar (11:05 PM), Kurla (11:13 PM), Ghatkopar (11:18 PM), Thane (11:34 PM), Dombivli (11:57 PM), and Kalyan (12:07 AM). Inform us in advance which station you will join from. The train reaches Kasara at about 1:30 AM, where our vehicle is waiting, and from there it is roughly two hours by road to Ratanwadi.
The train runs on time. If you miss it, you miss the trek, so be on the platform fifteen minutes early.
From Pune - by bus
The Pune group boards our private bus starting from Karve Nagar (10:00 PM) with stops at Shivajinagar (10:15 PM), Khadki (10:25 PM), Dapodi (10:35 PM), Kasarwadi (10:45 PM), and Nashik Phata (11:00 PM) the previous night, traveling directly to the base village via Narayangaon and Akole. Specific timing slots are shared in the WhatsApp trek group before departure.
Driving yourself (Self-Travel Option)
If you prefer your own vehicle, the route is Mumbai → Kasara → Ghoti → Bhandardara → Shendi → Ratanwadi, or Pune → Narayangaon → Akole → Ratanwadi. Parking is available in the village for a small fee paid to the gram panchayat. Inform us while booking so we can keep your meals and passes ready.
Best Time to Do the Ratangad Fort Trek
June to October is the monsoon and immediate post-monsoon window, when the slopes turn deep green, seasonal waterfalls open up along the trail and mist drifts across the fort all day. This is also when the trail is at its most slippery, so grip matters more than anything else you carry.
August to October brings the Sonki bloom, when the hillsides turn yellow. The rare purple Karvi flowers appear only once every seven years and draw crowds when they do.
November to February gives the clearest views - on a good winter morning you can pick out Kalsubai, the Alang-Madan-Kulang wall, Ajoba, and the full sweep of the Bhandardara backwaters from the top. Nights are cold at the base village.
Summer (March to May) is doable but hot and dry, with little shade on the upper section.
How hard is the trek, really
Ratangad is graded moderate. The trail is roughly 6-7 km round trip with about 1,500 ft of gain, and most groups take 2.5 to 3 hours up and a little under two hours down, plus time on top.
The first half is a gentle forest walk. The section that catches people out is near the top, where the path becomes rock-cut steps and two fixed iron ladders fitted with railings by the forest department. There is exposure beside the ladders, but no climbing skill is needed - you use your hands, take it one rung at a time, and a trek leader stays at the ladder until everyone is through.
If you can walk 5 km on level ground without stopping and climb six floors of stairs without your legs giving out, you are fit enough. If you have a fear of heights, tell us before booking rather than at the ladder.
What you will see on top
- Nedhe (the Eye of the Needle): A wind-carved hole straight through the rock ridge, large enough to sit inside, framing the peaks behind it. This is the photograph everyone comes for.
- Rock-cut water cisterns: Carved into the basalt centuries ago and still holding clean water through most of the year.
- The caves: Large enough to shelter around twenty people; one of them has a small waterfall running through it during heavy monsoon.
- Rani Mahal ruins: Remains of ancient structures and the fort’s gateways, including Ganesh Darwaja on the way in.
- The view: Kalsubai (the highest point in Maharashtra), the Alang-Madan-Kulang trio, Ajoba, Katrabai, and the Bhandardara reservoir spread out below.
Amruteshwar Temple at Ratanwadi
Before the climb we stop at the Amruteshwar Temple in the base village - a Shiva temple built in the Hemadpanthi style, around a thousand years old, with carved stone pillars and a pushkarni (step-well tank) beside it. It is one of the oldest surviving temples in this part of the Sahyadri and worth the twenty minutes on its own, quite apart from the fort above it.
Who comes on this trek
Our Ratangad batches are a mix of first-time trekkers, working professionals getting out of the city for a weekend, college groups, and families with children above twelve. Over 60% of our regular community are solo women travellers, and we keep the group size capped so nobody is left walking alone on the trail. If you are exploring alternative scenic coastal trails, you can also check our Dronagiri Fort Day Trek guide.
School, college, and corporate groups can book the whole batch on a date of their choosing - write to us and we will plan the logistics around your numbers.

We offer three flexible booking options: ₹1,499 per person for Mumbai Batch (including Kasara-to-base transfer, meals, and passes), ₹1,599 per person for Pune Batch (including direct private bus from Pune, meals, and passes), and ₹899 per person Without Travel (joining directly at Ratanwadi base village with meals and trek passes included).
Can I join directly at the base village with my own car/bike? What is the cost?
Yes! If you prefer driving yourself, you can book our Without Travel Package at ₹899 per person. You just need to reach Ratanwadi base village by 06:00 AM to 06:30 AM. Village breakfast, guided trek, lunch, and fort entry are all included in this pass.
Is the Ratangad Fort Trek suitable for beginners?
Yes, for beginners with basic fitness. The trail is a moderate 6-7 km round trip and the only technical bit is a pair of iron ladders near the top, which have railings and a trek leader posted at them. If you have never trekked before, tell us on WhatsApp what walking or stairs you manage in a normal week and we will tell you honestly whether to start here or with an easier fort.
How long does the Ratangad trek take?
About 2.5 to 3 hours to the top, an hour or so exploring the fort, and under two hours to come down. With breakfast, the temple visit, and lunch, the day at the base runs from roughly 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
How do I reach Ratangad from Mumbai?
Take the Central Railway CSMT-Kasara local with the group (train 95423, departing CSMT at 10:47 PM). Major boarding stations include Byculla (10:55 PM), Dadar (11:05 PM), Kurla (11:13 PM), Ghatkopar (11:18 PM), Thane (11:34 PM), Dombivli (11:57 PM), and Kalyan (12:07 AM). From Kasara station, our private vehicle transfers you directly to Ratanwadi.
How do I reach Ratangad from Pune?
The Pune group travels by direct private bus starting from Karve Nagar (10:00 PM) with stops at Shivajinagar, Khadki, Dapodi, Kasarwadi, and Nashik Phata (11:00 PM) the previous night, traveling directly to the base village. Boarding time is shared in the trek group before departure.
What is the best time to visit Ratangad?
June to October for green slopes, mist, and waterfalls; August to October for the yellow Sonki bloom; November to February for the clearest long-range views. The rare purple Karvi flowers bloom only once in seven years.
What is the Nedhe at Ratangad?
Nedhe, the “Eye of the Needle”, is a natural hole carved clean through the rock ridge near the summit by centuries of wind. You can sit inside it, and it frames the surrounding peaks - it is the single most photographed spot on the fort.
Is food included, and is Jain food available?
Yes. A hot village breakfast with chai and an unlimited Maharashtrian lunch are included, cooked by local hosts in Ratanwadi. Veg and non-veg options are available, and Jain food can be arranged if you mention it while booking so the village kitchen can plan for it.
Is drinking water available on the trail?
There are rock-cut cisterns on top with clean water, but carry 2.5 to 3 litres of your own. There is no shop between the base village and the summit.
Can children and senior citizens join?
Children from 12 years upwards are welcome with a parent or guardian. Seniors who walk regularly manage the trail fine; the ladders are the part to think about, so call us and we will talk it through before you book.
Are toilets and parking available at the base village?
Basic Indian-style toilets are available at Ratanwadi, and there is parking in the village for a small fee paid directly to the gram panchayat.
What should I carry for the Ratangad trek?
Trekking shoes with a proper grip (not flat-soled sneakers), 2.5-3 litres of water, a raincoat or poncho in the monsoon, a torch with spare batteries, dry snacks or energy bars, a 20-30 litre daypack, personal medicines, and a valid photo ID. Pack your phone and valuables in a plastic bag - the monsoon gets everything wet.
Can you camp at Ratangad?
The caves on top are large enough to camp in and are a favourite in winter. Our listed batch is a one-day trek, but if you want an overnight cave camp with your own group, write to us and we will plan it as a custom batch.
Is there mobile network on the fort?
Patchy. Expect signal in parts of the base village and almost none on the upper trail, so tell your family in advance that you may be unreachable for several hours.
What happens if it rains heavily or the trek is cancelled?
If we cancel - for weather, forest department restrictions, or too few participants - you can take a full refund or move your seat to another trek. If you cancel, our standard policy applies: a partial refund 72 hours or more before departure, and after that the seat is transferable to a friend rather than refundable.
How do I book the Ratangad Trek?
Use the Book Now button on this page to reserve a seat, or message us on WhatsApp at +91 8976874681 (Mumbai) or +91 93070 52479 (Pune). Advance payment confirms the seat.
