Ratangad fort trek, Bhandardara - With Sakhi

There is something magical about a night trek. You start climbing under the stars with a torch in hand, the air is cool, the trail is quiet, and you reach the top just in time to watch the sun rise over the Sahyadri. Night treks are also a smart way to beat the heat and the crowds. This guide lists the best night treks near Pune and Mumbai, when to go, what to carry and how to stay safe in the dark.

Why Go on a Night Trek?

  • Sunrise from the top: the main reason. A Sahyadri sunrise above the clouds is unforgettable.
  • Cool weather: no harsh sun, so you sweat less and need less water.
  • Stars: away from city lights the night sky is full of stars.
  • Fewer crowds: you reach the top before the day trekkers arrive.
  • Save a day: leave on Friday or Saturday night and be home by the afternoon.

Important: forest and local rules about night treks and night stays change from time to time, and some forts do not allow them. Always check the current rules or go with an organiser who knows them.

Best Season for Night Treks

  • October to February: the best time. Clear skies, cool nights and dry trails.
  • Late May to early June: firefly season in the Bhandardara and Rajmachi areas.
  • Monsoon: avoid night treks. Trails are slippery and streams can rise quickly in the dark.

Pick a night close to the full moon for extra light and easy walking, or a new moon night if you want the best stars.
