Koldher Fort is a quiet, lesser-known fort in the Satmala range of Nashik district. It sits right next to Rajdher Fort, and the two are often done together in one long day from Rajdherwadi. If you like forts without crowds, big open views and a proper walk, this one is worth a visit. This guide covers the Koldher Fort trek route, how to reach it, what you will see, and what to carry.

About Koldher Fort
Koldher is a large, wide fort that stands across a valley from Rajdher. Not much remains standing, but the plateau on top is broad and the fort worked as a watchtower over an important mountain pass, supporting the bigger Chandwad fort nearby. According to records, the fort was under the Marathas and surrendered to the British in 1818, along with many other forts, after the fall of Trimbakgad. The construction looks like it was never fully finished, which is part of its quiet charm today.
Things to See on Koldher Fort
- Hanuman idol on the way up: a tall stone idol of Lord Hanuman stands on the approach path, and a newer Hanuman idol stands in the open on the plateau near the fort.
- A large natural cave: a big cave, roughly 30 by 30 feet, that can shelter 50 to 60 people. Dressed-stone masonry can be seen near its entrance.
- Rock-cut granaries and storerooms: carved into the rock on the plateau, a reminder of how the fort was once stocked.
- Rock-cut water cisterns: some cisterns near the top are partly buried. Water is usually available only until about March, so never depend on it.
- Wide views: on a clear day you can see the Kanchan-Manchan and Dhodap ranges and the whole Satmala belt, with Rajdher right across the valley.
Koldher Fort Trek Route
The trek starts from Rajdherwadi. A short stretch on a dirt road leads towards the village dam, then the path climbs onto a plateau. From there you walk along a valley ridge to reach Koldher Pass, about 1.5 hours from Rajdherwadi. At the pass, a trail from Tangdi village joins in. From the pass, the path to the fort is steep and takes about 30 minutes to reach the plateau below the pinnacle.
Another approach is from Tangdi (Shirur) village on the Chandwad road, which takes about 2.5 hours to the pass.
The trail is wide and open with almost no shade, so start early and carry plenty of water.
Koldher and Rajdher in One Day
The two forts are close, about 1 to 2 hours apart on foot, so many trekkers do Rajdherwadi, Koldher and Rajdher in one go. It makes a long, satisfying day. If you are going in a group, plan the climb carefully and leave early so that you finish in daylight.
How to Reach Koldher Fort
- From Nashik: Chandwad is about 66 km from Nashik by road, and Rajdherwadi is about 10 to 11 km beyond Chandwad. Chandwad has hotels if you want to stay the night before.
- From Mumbai and Pune: reach Nashik by road or train first, then continue to Chandwad and Rajdherwadi. Most trekkers take a night journey and start the climb in the morning, or stay at Chandwad the previous night.
Best Time to Visit Koldher Fort
The best time is from the end of the monsoon until about February. The hills are green after the rains and the weather is pleasant. The trail has almost no shade, so summer is hot and tiring, and water in the cisterns dries up by about March.
Things to Carry
- 3 litres of water or more, because the fort cannot be relied on for drinking water
- Trekking shoes with good grip, a cap and sunscreen
- Packed food and energy snacks, as there are no shops on the trail
- A torch, a power bank and a basic first-aid kit
- A light jacket for the morning wind on the plateau
Tips for a Safe Trek
- Start at first light. The route is long and open, with no shade
- Do not climb alone, and tell someone at the base village when you leave and return
- Take care on the steep section after the pass, especially when loose stones are wet or dusty
- Carry your plastic and waste back down
