  • Bhairavgad Shirpunje, Aundha-Patta, Brahmagiri - 180 km. Harder, less crowded forts for people who have done a few already.

How we travel from Mumbai

Almost every departure has a Mumbai pickup, so you do not need your own vehicle:

  • By local train: for the Kasara, Karjat, Asangaon, Panvel and Neral side forts we gather at CSMT or a convenient suburban station and travel together, then pick up a private vehicle from the last station to the base village. For Ratangad, for example, the group boards train 95423 from CSMT at 10:47 pm and meets our vehicle at Kasara.
  • By private bus or tempo traveller: for anything beyond 150 km, and for all overnight treks, we run a private vehicle from a fixed Mumbai pickup point.
  • Without transport: on most treks you can also join us directly at the base village at a lower price if you are driving yourself.

The exact pickup point, reporting time and the transport options for a given date are on each trek page, inside the booking box.

When to go

  • Monsoon (June-September): the best season in the Sahyadris - waterfalls, green plateaus and cloud. Rock patches get slippery, so stick to graded-easy forts if it is your first time.
  • Post-monsoon (October-November): our favourite window. Everything is still green, the air is clear and the views open up. Most of our October departures sell out.
  • Winter (December-February): cool, dry and ideal for long and two-day treks like Harishchandragad, Salher and Rajgad to Torna.
  • Summer (March-May): early starts and night treks only. We shift to shorter forts and heritage walks.

What is included on every trek

  • Return transport from the city pickup point on most departures
  • Meals as listed on the trek page - usually breakfast and one hot meal
  • An experienced trek lead and a local guide where the route needs one
  • First aid kit and basic safety equipment
  • Fort history and storytelling along the way - the part most groups skip

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best trek near Mumbai for beginners?

Dronagiri Fort near Uran, Karnala Fort near Panvel and Mahuli Fort near Asangaon are the three we recommend most often. All three are single-day treks under 90 km from Mumbai, with a clear trail and no exposed rock sections. Our heritage walks at Vasai and Belapur are easier still.

What is the closest trek to Mumbai?

Belapur Fort at roughly 40 km, which is inside Navi Mumbai, followed by Dronagiri Fort at Uran at about 55 km. Both are comfortable half-day outings.

Can I do a trek near Mumbai without a car?

Yes. Most of our departures include transport from a fixed Mumbai pickup point, and the Kasara, Karjat, Asangaon and Panvel line forts are reachable by local train with our vehicle waiting at the last station. You do not need your own vehicle for any trek on this page.

How much does a trek near Mumbai cost?

Our heritage walks start at ₹299 per person. Single-day treks with transport from Mumbai are usually ₹899 to ₹1,599, and two-day treks such as Harishchandragad are ₹1,799 upward. The exact price for a date, and the cheaper join-at-base option, are in the booking box on each trek page.

Are weekend treks near Mumbai safe for solo travellers?

They are, and a large share of the people on our departures come alone. You travel with the group from the pickup point, a trek lead stays with the group throughout, and we keep a first aid kit on every trek. Many of our regulars first joined solo.

How fit do I need to be?

For the easy day treks, if you can walk for three to four hours with breaks you will be fine. Forts graded moderate or difficult on their pages involve four to seven hours of walking with steep or rocky sections, and are better attempted after a couple of easier treks.

What should I carry?

Two litres of water, shoes with grip, a windcheater or poncho in monsoon, a cap, a torch for night treks, personal medicines and some dry snacks. Each trek page lists anything extra that particular route needs.
